SEIZURE / FIT

Stay calm — most seizures stop on their own

DO:

  • Protect their head — cushion it with something soft
  • Move dangerous objects away from them
  • Time the seizure — note when it started
  • Stay with them until fully recovered

DO NOT:

  • Restrain them — let the seizure happen
  • Put anything in their mouth — they won't swallow their tongue
  • Move them — unless they're in danger
  • Give food or drink until fully alert

When it stops:

  • Put them on their side (recovery position)
  • Check they're breathing
  • Stay calm and reassure them — they may be confused

Call 999 if:

  • It's their first seizure
  • It lasts more than 5 minutes
  • They don't regain consciousness
  • They have another seizure soon after
  • They're injured, pregnant, or diabetic
  • They're in water
  • You're not sure

Most seizures stop within 2-3 minutes. Stay calm — your calm helps them.
