1 Check response
Shake their shoulders firmly
Shout: "Can you hear me? Open your eyes!"
2 No response? Call 999
Put phone on speaker
They will guide you through everything
3 Check breathing
Tilt head back, lift chin
Look at chest — is it rising and falling?
Listen and feel for breath on your cheek
Check for 10 seconds max
4 Not breathing normally? Start CPR
Push hard and fast on centre of chest
- Heel of hand on centre of chest
- Other hand on top, fingers linked
- Arms straight, push DOWN 5-6cm
- Push at 100-120 per minute (beat of Stayin' Alive)
- Don't stop until help arrives
Don't worry about getting it perfect
Any CPR is better than no CPR. Push hard, push fast. The 999 operator will guide you.
